What happens to matter when it becomes too small to see? Is it still matter? Can we define its properties? How do we know it exists? Students explore these questions as they begin to build mental models of objects too small to be seen, starting with matter they can see and finishing by bringing together scale, proportion and quantity to construct an explanation for why Sanford Lab must build very large detectors to make a neutrino ‘visible’.

5-PS1-2 Measure and graph quantities to provide evidence that regardless of the type of change that occurs when heating, cooling, or mixing substances, the total weight of matter is conserved.
