At Deep Talks: Nobel Day, Dr. Steve Smith, a professor of nano-engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology will discuss the Nobel-Prize winning work of Gerard Mourou in the field of laser physics and how that research is applied in the real world. He and students from his program will also offer interesting optical science demonstrations.

The free event begins at 5 p.m. at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, 160 W. Main Street, Lead, South Dakota. Students from the nano-engineering program at SD Mines will demonstrate optical science techniques during the social hour. The program begins at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served; free beer is available for those 21 and older.

CORES Award

At this year’s Nobel Day, we’re starting our own awards tradition. The CORES Award will be given annually to an individual, group, business or organization that supports Communication and OutReach Experiences in Science within the region.

For the past three years, Crow Peak Brewing Company has sponsored every Deep Talks event. So, in this, our inaugural year, the 2018 CORES Award goes to Crow Peak Brewing Company of Spearfish. The award will be given at Deep Talks.

“We are so pleased to be able to give this award to Crow Peak for their ongoing support of our outreach efforts,” said Constance Walter, communications director at Sanford Lab.
